The abundance of different tidal turbine concepts shows that the sea has not yet “arbitrated” between the better and poorer solutions. The technological evidence will be judged based solely on the economic factor, which is the cost per kWh produced, while integrating both investment factors and exploitation costs. The “survivability” and “maintainability” of these machines in a hostile submarine environment will be major factors, together with the related variables of environmental neutrality and social incidence (conflicts of use, employment opportunities, acceptation etc.). Thus today the state of the art reveals among these projects: the first breakages, technological dead ends, abandoned projects, lack of referencing etc., and points to obvious economic distractions.
The optimisation of the hydrodynamic power law enabled SABELLA to anchor its solution on the fundamental values of reliability, robustness and necessary technological precision. This gives SABELLA a competitive edge and a high economic performance, already acknowledged on an international scale.
